Feb 14 – Long Drive Scouting Snow Goose Numbers

Today it has pretty much rained all day. Sometimes rather hard. High field is 15 snow geese. Several groups didn’t hunt and others only hunted for a short time. They shot little or nothing in conditions not great for snow goose hunting.

We have been getting a lot of calls about bird numbers. There is not a lot of birds on the ground in this area. Most of what we have been shooting is migrators. We need migrating conditions to be successful. The last few days the weather has not been in our favor. Today I drove about 500 miles to see what is south of us. I was pleasantly surprised with the number of birds down there. I really feared I would see very few. That was not the case. There were scattered flocks of 500-2500 birds for about the first two hours. Then farther south there was 5,000 to 10,000 bird feeds. It was not too hard to find them just driving the main roads so I’m sure if would have done more investigating on the gravels I would have found many more. We have hunts until Feb 23. Based on what I saw we will be good through that time. Thursday winds switch to the south for several days making conditions favorable for migration.
