The last four days have been as good as anything I’ve seen in 26 years of chasing spring snows. Today was our half‑day hunt, and the numbers were just stupid good again — our high field shot 104, and our low field finished with 23, giving us a 56‑bird average. This streak will end someday, but man, it’s been fun while it’s rolling.
We still have some room Feb 23–26. Years like this don’t come around often. I was told the hatch was very good, and our hunting can’t prove that wrong.
We also got our first band of the season. It took about 2,700 birds to get one — a far cry from the early 2000s when you’d get one every 300 birds. These days it’s closer to 1/2000. That used to be the odds of a neck collar. I honestly can’t remember the last time we shot a necker.
My phone screen died today, so I spent the afternoon dealing with that mess. I hate getting a new phone. While I was doing that, the guides put out some A‑Frame style blinds. I’m curious to see how they compare to the laydowns we’ve always used. I’ve got mixed feelings, but getting up out of the mud would be a welcome change if they work.
We’ll see if the streak continues tomorrow.
