We hunted today. I have never seen this many birds so early. There has to be 200-300,000 snows here right now. The three of us ended the day with 38 birds. The picture is a little blurry because it was taken with a camera phone.
Here are my thoughts on the bird numbers. This is only the second year in 9 years that the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge was open before the snow geese began migrating. On years when the refuge is frozen we lose most of the first birds to Nebraska but this year it is open. This is similar to 2004. I believe this is part of the reason we are seeing so many snow geese already. There are still a lot of birds here right now and the temps have been unseasonably warm with 4 of the last 7 days in the 60’s.
