It is hard to believe the amount of snow still in North Eastern South Dakota. This is not a typical year, but it is one of the reasons I have a love-hate relationship with South Dakota snow goose hunting. The weather that far can have wild swings. We made the right call this year. It looks like there are still 20+ inches of snow where we usually hunt. 

This will be my last post for the 2023 snow goose season, so let’s recap our season. It was a good year overall. For us, 2022 and 2023 were very similar. While 2022 had big swings from exceptions to slower hunting, 2023 was more consistent with steady hunting throughout the season, which I like better. We harvested 3793 snow geese. In Arkansas, we harvested 2708 snows for a 24.6 bird average. In Iowa, we harvested 1085 with a 16.8 bird average. Since we hunt only 13 days in Iowa, weather events (snow & rain) made up a larger % of the hunt days, which I feel is the difference in the average. Our best hunt was 148, and our worst was 0. We had 4 zeros in 39 days of hunting multiple fields running per day. They are a small % of the hunts, but they do happen. We had 2 100+ bird days with a lot of hunts in the 20-50 bird range, which is great!
