Sorry it has been a couple days but the internet at the house died. Last night we got dumped on by rain. It is extremely muddy and I highly recommend neoprene waders if you want a comfortable hunt. Hunting success has been spotty. There have been a few good days but my guide are pretty […]
Everyday hunting has been improving. Yesterday high field was 38 with most others in the teens and 20’s. LOTS OF MUD! It is suppose to rain everyday this week and conditions are already muddy.
There is not shortage of snow geese in the Mound City area although the last several days hunting success has been slower than average. It will change…always does…just like a light switch was flipped they will start working better. The birds that have been here are front birds. These are the ones we typically have […]
Today ended up being a pretty slow for our hunters. The frost is coming out of the ground and we are forecasted to have rain tomorrow, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. The fields are already becoming sloppy and any added rain will just add to that problem. Neoprene waders are very nice in muddy conditions.
Although Squaw Creek is still frozen a large number of snow geese have moved up into the Mound City area. Hunting success was low this morning however we are hoping for a good afternoon.
Yesterday I got back to Mound City from Marshall. Today (3/4) is the last half day hunt down there. Today is also the first groups of guys in Mound City. I drove through the refuge and it is most locked with ice except for a small open pocket about 600 yards out from the observation […]
Yesterday the boys saw 2000 birds in Mound City. The refuge is 99.5% frozen. Tryg said most of the snow will be gone by today. The forecast temp Thur-Sat is supposed to be in the mid 40’s low 50’s with a good south wind. I’m banking on this to move birds into the Mound City […]
We are starting to run snow goose hunts March 4th back in Mound City. Currently there is a little snow on the ground. The Squaw Creek Refuge is frozen except for a small pocket of open water in front of the observation tower. The forecast for this coming weekend looks very good to me. Today […]
Yesterday was our first guided hunters in Marshall. One field shot 29 and zero. Loads of snow geese migrated into the area yesterday. Today we have three fields. Just to clarify. Those hunting March 1 will be hunting in Marshall Missouri for your entire hunt. For those hunting Wednesday March 3 or later. You will […]
We have to make a plan to make the transition from down south to Mound City. With all of the weather issues, where we hunt on March 5th is where we are going to be hunting until March 21. There can be only one place for and it has to be Mound City. While the […]
Finally we found lots of birds. We are going to run a couple groups that couldn’t move back. Lot of snow geese migrating today. We were not hunting Mound City but plan to by next Friday. Those hunting Monday through Thursday will be notified as to where to meet. I would tell everybody where we […]
Its 3:45am and we are headed south to an area that we believe is holding a good numbers of snow geese. I was able to make contact with all but one of the groups of hunters that are coming in through Feb 28. I plan of be running snow goose hunts this weekend. We have […]
This is turning out to be very interesting weather this year. I have been thinking back and I can’t remember a year where we have not had a good number of snow geese within a reasonable distance of Mound City by now. Today two truckloads of guide drove all day looking for a large concentration […]
Today there was a small migration of snow geese. We saw several thousand snows that appear to be using the river to roost at night. We set a spread this morning finishing about 11 am. Hunted a couple hours during mid day and shot a couple. There is a small area of open water on […]
Today was the first day we have seen snows in the Mound City area. Getting lots of reports of bird moving up to just south of us. Long range forecast for the upcoming weekend looks good.
I have decided to postpone hunts Feb 19-21 due to low bird numbers and poor weather conditions. Now before everybody hunting Feb 26-28 starts calling…breath…we have 10 days. The difference between 0 and 200,000 birds can be a few hours and we have a few days. This isn’t our first rodeo. If there is issues […]
Old man winter keeps hanging around this year. With less than a week until our first snow goose hunts are suppose to start it isn’t looking too promising that we will be hunting in Mound City. We will be heading down on Sunday. Monday we will scout areas a couple hours south to see if […]
Today I have gotten several phone calls from Texas, Southern Illinois, and Southern Missouri. All have one thing in common. Snows geese are migrating north. We were in NW Missouri over the weekend and saw a very small number of snow geese. There is still snow on the ground but the good thing is there […]
Today is the first day of the Conservation Order 2010. Our first guided snow goose hunts are Feb 19. If you are going to the Iowa Duck Calling contest in Burlington, IA this weekend I’ll be there at the Deadly Decoy™ booth. Stop by and chat.
All the reports I have been getting from my southern connections say snow goose migration has begun to head north. My farmers in Mound City say they have been seeing a few birds push up on the warmer days but that are not staying in the area. This is very common and something I expect […]
