March 15 – Windy But Good

Too much wind is just as bad as no wind. I might even prefer hunting low winds to heavy wind days. Today it was howling. It makes for hard shooting as the birds get out really fast. Nevertheless, we had a solid day. Our best field was 48, and our low field was 20. I’ll … [Read More]

March 12, 13, 14 – A Really Long Day

I’m sorry for the missed reporting the last couple days here is how things went. March 12 – Very cold but we picked up a lot of birds from the north (I believe). Snow was on the ground and a strong north wind that was COLD! At noon we started pulling half of the spreads. … [Read More]

March 9 – First Band What The %&$#?@!

In my field, we didn’t really see a goose until 11:30. Between 11:30 and 4:30 we picked up 28, which was our high field. We didn’t see an overwhelming number of birds but those we saw did it right. Low field shot 6. About half the fields were in teen or twenties. The other half … [Read More]

March 9 – Snowy Start

A snowy start to hunting. Our best field was 17, and our low field was 5. All of the snow melted during the day, so we are back to clear ground again. Going into our last weekend dates in Iowa. We are hunting until March 16 here. Then we are off to snowy South Dakota.

March 8 – Drizzle

Misty morning and evening with a heavy overcast during the day best describes the hunting conditions for today. Two of our migrator fields that have been doing well did not today. We got our first zero in Iowa. However, the fields closer to the staged birds did ok. Our best harvested 34 snow … [Read More]

March 7 – Another Solid Day

It was the best day we have had in Iowa today. Some fields did not see as many birds as others, but the hunting has been good overall. Our best field shot 64 snow geese, followed closely by a 57-bird field. Our low field was 9. They didn’t see many; that was just the case … [Read More]

March 6 – Solid Day

It was a solid day today. Our best field shot 44 before a feed started nearby and drew many of the birds to it. Low field shot 18 that also had multiple feeds near it. I’ll take a day like this any day, any time.  We are watching the weather in South Dakota. It’s white … [Read More]

March 5 – Different Than I Expected

Today started out differently than I expected. I saw 63 degrees ESE wind – I was excited, but it was pretty chilly this morning. The field I hunted was low, we shot 1 bird, but my hunters left at 9ish as they had an 11-hour drive. Most of the geese split us to the south … [Read More]

March 4 – Low to No Wind

During the first two days of Iowa, we have either had the wind with no birds flying or no wind with a sky full of them. Regardless we are having a good time, seeing a lot, and harvesting a few. Our high field for the day was 29, and the low field shot 6. These … [Read More]

March 3 – First Day In Iowa

The first day in Iowa was average. The high field shot 28, and the low field was 8. Except for the low field, all the rest were in the teens or twenties.  Lots of birds in the area, and there aren’t as many young birds in the flocks as I saw much of the time … [Read More]
